Nautilus (2005)

(recording still missing)

Nautilus is my submission to bremsstrahlung recordings' Golden Mean project. Here's the description I sent to bremsstrahlung kingpin Josh Russell.

Using an image synthesizer (Metasynth) I was able to take drawings of Fibonacci rectangles and get pitch interval information as well as event durations from the drawings. The piece is called Nautilus, because the non-quantized shape implied by the quantized Fibonacci rectangles looks like a nautilus sea shell. I'm interested in the ability of non-organic sounds to imply organic forms and behaviors. A few of my other pieces have worked with this idea – harsh digital sounds behaving in a non-digital manner.
